I’m not a particularly technical kind of guy. I’m not great with websites and data and all the stuff I thought I’d need to know to make social media advertising work. Turns out I was wrong. If you are at least a little bit familiar with Facebook, you’ll be able to get ads up and running very quickly. I’ll guide you through the whole process, teaching you the trickier concepts, explaining the jargon and then presenting you with hours of detailed screenflows that allow you to look over my shoulder as I set up and monitor my ads. IT'S TOO EXPENSIVE
I thought it would cost too much to make a Facebook campaign work as it should, and it is one of the most frequent concerns that I hear from other authors. It’s not true. You can run simple list building ads for as little as $5 a day. And that’s an investment - the goal is to make profit as new readers buy your books.
I sold thousands of books last year. My John Milton series has been a best-seller everywhere I’ve sold it, and it has been downloaded more than 1 million times.
But it wasn’t always like this.
Rewind to 2012. I published my first Kindle book and sold…nothing. I almost gave up. I knew that I could write, and I knew that readers who would love my books were out there. But how could I find them?
2013. I published THE CLEANER, the first John Milton book. Readers were not exactly beating down my door. I nearly quit again. But I pressed on, learned everything I could, and wrote more.
2014. The tipping point. My wife was on maternity leave with my second child, and I had to make it work. I built systems that would take care of the marketing for me, leaving me time to write. Using the SIMPLE methods I’ll teach you, I took a mailing list of 1,000 readers and finished with 15,000. I went from making a few hundred dollars a month to five figures. I quit my job on 28 November. I liked my job but I LOVE writing. And I LOVE being my own boss.
2015. I added Facebook ads to the mix and it went stratospheric. I made more than $50,000 in April and sales continue to grow.
2016. My list is more than 50,000 strong. My last launch hit the top #100 on Amazon and was #2 worldwide on Apple. I’m projecting a high six figure income this year.
And it feels great!

I wrote my first novel in 2009 and published it in 2010. I shopped it around to agents first but no one wanted it. I ended up with something like 21 rejection letters. Not a ton, by any stretch, but enough to make me think about other options. I decided to self publish and went through a vanity press. After spending nearly $2000 to get the thing in print I only sold about 50 copies that year, ending up way in the hole. I almost didn’t write the second book in the series and only did so at the begging of a friend who loved the first one.
In 2012, I wrote the sequel and published it, along with a revised version of the first one, in December of that year. I also created two novellas as giveaways to get more readers. I knew what a lead magnet was before most other authors. But I had a problem. Traffic.
I had great lead magnets, good books, but my blog was getting less than five visits a day. I tried guest posting but that brought in the wrong kinds of leads. I tried some Facebook stuff but that didn’t work. Twitter didn’t help either. I was lucky because even without traffic, I was still selling 5-10 books a day and on really good days, 20-30. I always dreamed of writing novels full time but sales like that couldn’t support my standard of living or my family. I wrote and released new books, as is common advice, and sales increased slightly but not enough to quit my job. As time went by, I hated my job more and more and each day literally hurt my chest when I had to wake up and go in. I just knew I wasn’t doing what I was meant to do. But I was lost. I had less than 100 fiction subscribers and no idea how to get more.
